Report from the 12th Transatlantic Dialogue Meeting (25 - 28 June 2010)
On 25 – 28 June 2010, the American Council on Education (ACE), the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) and the European University Association (EUA) convened approximately 30 college and university heads from Canada, Europe, and the United States in the 12th Transatlantic Dialogue, hosted by New York University.
The European delegation was led by President Jean-Marc Rapp and Board members Jean-Pierre Finance, Lauritz Holm-Nielsen, and Sijbolt Noorda.
The seminar explored institutional responses to the current turbulent higher education environment – one that is characterised by demands for greater access, accountability, funding cutbacks and cost scrutiny.
The discussion focused on internal decision making and resource allocation, the role of higher education institutions in local and regional economic development, and improving, documenting and assessing student learning. The meeting concluded with a look ahead to 2020 and an exploration of how to prepare today’s institutions to cope with change drivers such as shifting student demographics and faculty members’ roles and profiles.
