UNIPA is a consolidated cultural, scientific and teaching higher education in central-western Sicily with 65 000 students. Its 12 Faculties and 80 Departments cover the most important domains of contemporary scientific and technological knowledge.

A wide range of about 130 courses (first and second cycle) are offered yearly as well as 50 master and specialisation and 90 PhD courses, targeted to the training of specific professional figures, often in cooperation with external institutions and companies, which attracted 14,000 first-year students in the academic year 2008/2009. The University General Hospital is a local health corporation that works in synergy with the Faculty of Medicine. It provides 600 beds, 300 day-hospital beds, and a first-aid service.

Along with teaching activities UNIPA has always had an educational mission, focused on both social and cultural aspects, typical of a public University, and has greater relevance in the specific territorial and social context where it operates.

Scientific research is a basic feature of a university education and is a priority that cannot be questioned. However, maintaining high quality research in all disciplines, in an increasingly competitive and selective world, has become a challenge for the wide range of scientific domains present in universities like Palermo. The demand for specific scientific and technological training is increasing in volume and requires adequate educational support, both through scientific research and constant interactions with the productive world.

Among recent UNIPA strategic policies the development of international relationships, particularly addressed to the Mediterranean area, plays an essential role: students and professors mobility has been increased and a large number of agreements for research and/or creation of international research groups have been signed.

Furthermore, given UNIPA's size and territorial spread, and considering its social role, it has been necessary to devote part of its financial resources to improving and increasing the value of our architectural heritage, not only to provide students, staff and other users with adequate accommodation facilities, but also to maintain its historical relevance.
