Published by the Cambridge University Press, A History of the University in Europe consists of four volumes, three of which are currently available:
- Universities in the Middle Ages
- Universities in Early Modern Europe (1500-1800)
- Universities in the Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries (1800-1945)
- Universities since 1945
This four-part series, which covers the development of the university in Europe from its origins to the present day, focuses on a number of major themes viewed from a European perspective. The originality of the series lies in its comparative, interdisciplinary, collaborative and trans-national nature. It deals with the content of what was taught at universities, but its main purpose is to provide an appreciation of the role and structures of universities as seen against a backdrop of changing conditions, ideas and values.
The editors included some 50 historians in Europe and the US to work on a common canvas so that comparisons could be made on the development of the academic institution over time in terms of its teachers, students, graduates, curricula, and financing, as well as of its links to the authorities. A general presentation of the extension of academic training in Europe leads to an analysis of the main trends in university life within the period being studied. The aim was not to compile a history by merging the chronicles of individual universities but to study the university as a phenomenon of social, economic, and scientific importance, i.e., as a European institution that defined the culture and intellectual development of its region.
The project and editorial team were first set up in the early eighties by the CRE, which became later the European University Association. The final volume, which analyses the recent past and the universities' multiplication from 1945 to the present has been published, thus bringing an end to a 20 year project, under the chairmanship of Professor Walter Rüegg.
A History of the University in Europe was originally published in English, but it is also available in German, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian and Chinese.
