Perspectives from the Trends 2018 report and the EFFECT project

Learning and teaching is a core mission for Europe’s universities and has gained in importance in discussions when addressing the future of the European Higher Education Area. In recent years, EUA has conducted several activities in the field of learning and teaching, with the view that universities must drive developments in this area, in close collaboration with all major stakeholder groups, including national and European policy makers.

This event will launch EUA’s flagship report Trends 2018: Learning and teaching in the European Higher Education Area, which presents an analysis from data gathered from more than 300 higher education institutions in 48 European countries. Trends 2018 examines how learning and teaching at European higher education institutions evolves in the context of changing demands, and European- and national-level policies and reforms. Findings from Trends 2018 will be presented, and debated through a panel discussion reflecting different stakeholder perspectives. In order to bridge these developments with national and institutional practices and policies, the event will also offer perspectives from the European Forum for Enhanced Collaboration in Teaching (EFFECT) project, with a focus on how national strategies for learning and teaching contribute to enhancing learning and teaching, and how institutional strategies can re-emphasise the education mission of the university.

    (1) Study on national initiatives in learning and teaching in Europe

As a follow-up to some of the results of the Trends 2018 survey, this study is based on a series of semi-structured interviews on national learning and teaching initiatives, with experts from 28 European higher education systems, conducted from November 2018 to August 2018 as part of the EFFECT project. The study maps and analyses major policies and initiatives by which public authorities in these countries support the enhancement of learning and teaching.

    (2) Institutional strategies

In order to help higher education institutions develop and enhance strategic approaches for learning and teaching, the EFFECT project has created an institutional strategies support package. The latter consists of the ten European Principles for the enhancement of learning and teaching and a collection of guiding questions designed for systematic reflection and discussion around the Principles.
