Research and innovation are crucial for the development and growth of European societies. Universities are at the centre of generating new knowledge and technological breakthroughs, with doctoral education being a fundamental component in shaping the university of tomorrow and addressing societal demands.
The European University Association established the Council for Doctoral Education (EUA-CDE) in 2008 with the mission to contribute to the development, advancement and improvement of doctoral education and research training in Europe. A decade later, it is time to take stock of past achievements and reflect on the important challenges that lie ahead and how doctoral education contributes to successful policies in areas such as research integrity, digitalisation and global exchange. To lead the way, EUA conducted a Europe-wide study on the current state of doctoral education. Its preliminary findings will provide the basis for discussion.
