EUA offers condolences for Kofi Annan, a champion of education

21 August 2018

EUA would like to express its condolences for the death of Kofi Annan. A renowned leader in the field of diplomacy, peace and international development, Annan served as the UN Secretary General from 1997 to 2006.

Notably, during his tenure, the “Education for All” movement made major strides, promoting a global commitment to provide quality basic education for all children, youth and adults. Also, among Annan’s many accomplishments was his contribution to the Millennium Declaration and the subsequent eight Millennium Development Goals, one of which was to achieve universal primary education. Importantly, this initiative was the precursor to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, which also highlight the importance of providing inclusive and quality education.

EUA wishes to express its reverence for Kofi Annan’s achievements, especially in promoting education for all, tolerance and respect – values that European universities share and support.
