2019 EUA-CDE Thematic Workshop

17 - 18 Jan 2019 On-Site
Vu Amsterdam

The 2019 EUA-CDE Thematic Workshop will focus on inter-institutional collaboration in doctoral education. Participants will reflect on how universities with different goals and levels of development can benefit from different forms of collaboration. This includes between universities, as well as other institutions doing research at the local, national and international level. The workshop will also address related challenges and will provide an occasion to identify new collaboration opportunities between EUA-CDE members.

Registration is now closed as maximum attendance was reached.

It is my privilege as Rector of Vrije Universiteit (VU) Amsterdam to welcome you to our university. We are honoured to host the 2019 EUA-CDE Thematic Workshop, and to learn from and be inspired by our peers in our efforts to continuously improve our doctoral programmes.

Educating young students to become future leaders in their chosen fields, balancing disciplinary depth and broader relevance, is the main assignment universities are given by their constituencies. Doctoral candidates are a special case. They deliberately set out on an intensive and focused endeavour, in order to develop the skills to perform research.

The landscape for employment after earning a doctorate has changed significantly in the last decades. While an academic career was the traditional next step after a doctorate, the options have widened dramatically, and we nowadays witness that the majority of graduates do not pursue a career in academia. The fact is that the growth in the number of doctoral graduates is not matched by an equal growth in the number of academic jobs. But that is not the sole reason for this change. The academic, research, and analytical skills than one learns as a doctoral candidate qualifies one for a wide spectrum of roles. Graduates themselves and both for profit and not-for-profit organisations have discovered that doctorate holders are highly qualified and motivated staff that are an asset to every organisation.

Wherever their careers lead them, doctoral graduates often comprise the research and thinking capacity of their employing organisations. A special focus of our university is on designing projects with developing and emerging economies. The core of these projects is always the training of local doctoral candidates, as that has proven to be the best way to reach sustainable impact: building capacity!

The theme of the 2019 EUA-CDE Thematic Workshop is a highly topical one, inter-institutional cooperation in doctoral education. Knowledge knows no boundaries, and mobility is a key component of the research enterprise. Working together internationally and across the borders of disciplines is increasingly important. Considering the participating universities in EUA-CDE I am confident that important contributions to the furthering of international cooperation in doctoral education will come out of this workshop!

I wish you a fruitful and challenging workshop and a great stay at VU and in Amsterdam.

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam: looking further

Ever since it was founded in 1880, VU Amsterdam has been known for its distinctive approach to knowledge. VU is an open organisation, strongly linked to people and society. What matters is not just the acquisition of a greater depth of knowledge, but also a wider one. We ask and expect our students, researchers, PhD candidates and employees to look further – to look further than their own interests and their own field, and further than what is familiar and further than the here and now.

With its excellent educational and research programmes, VU Amsterdam brings together talented individuals in a wide range of disciplines from many different countries and is a recognised research university with a centralised campus. Located in the southern business district, a multicultural and creative environment, the university is 15 minutes from the city centre by bike.
