2023 EUA-CDE Thematic Workshop

19 - 20 Jan 2023 On-Site
University Of Agricultural Sciences And Veterinary Medicine Of Cluj-napoca

The 2023 EUA-CDE Thematic Workshop will focus on how universities can develop a strategic approach to sustainability in doctoral education, while maintaining key principles and values. Topics discussed during the workshop will include new forms of mobility, green careers, skills and innovation, sustainable research practices and the role of fundamental research in addressing the challenges that lie ahead. During two days, participants will discuss the role of doctoral schools and programmes in confronting the climate crisis, and how doctoral education plays an important role in the transition towards a carbon-neutral society and to prepare the next generation of researchers for the decades to come.

ICHAT MTCThanks to a mix of plenary sessions and interactive formats, this event will provide an occasion to discuss these aspects and identify innovative solutions together with the EUA-CDE community and other stakeholders active in this field.

In addition, EUA-CDE is organising a pre-meeting session on co-tutelles and joint doctorates. This special event will present a Thematic Peer Group report dedicated to this topic and stimulate an exchange between participants on how to successfully organise these kinds of collaborations.

This Thematic Workshop will be of interest to anyone with responsibilities and interest in doctoral education (either at the institutional, faculty or disciplinary level) including academic leaders, doctoral education professionals, postdoctoral researchers and doctoral candidates. Please note that the event is reserved to EUA-CDE members only.

Welcome from the Rector

261 NIC 0258 Nicu CherciuDoctoral education is the highest level of academic education and is strongly focused on research and innovation. However, the framework for doctoral studies as well as the expected outcome of doctoral projects are both very dynamic and strongly affected by rapidly evolving global developments and challenges. Universities, as providers of research and innovation are expected to deal with and rapidly adapt to these challenges by upgrading their infrastructure, human resources and ideas. Such adaptations are not possible without a framework for inter-institutional cooperation, ideally in the specific field of doctoral education.

The European University Association, through its Council for Doctoral Education (EUA-CDE) offers an ideal framework to tackle these challenges, including through its periodic thematic events. The University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Cluj-Napoca is proud to host the EUA-CDE Thematic Workshop from 18-20 January 2023.

Cluj-Napoca is a vibrant and multicultural city, with one of the highest rates of economic growth in Europe over the last year. This is certainly in connection with the city’s hosting of several of Romania’s top research universities, including ours. The topic of the thematic workshop will revolve around green doctoral education. This is closely aligned with the main research and education area of our university, which is dedicated to life sciences. We look forward to welcoming a diverse international audience and we are committed to providing an ideal environment for a successful workshop.

About Cluj-Napoca and the University

City Cluj NapocaThe University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Cluj-Napoca (USAMV Cluj-Napoca) was founded in October 1869. From its beginnings as an Institute of Agronomic Education, it has today developed into one of the top universities in Romania. It currently counts six faculties and offers all levels of academic education (bachelor’s, master’s, doctorate) in various fields of life sciences. The total number of students is close to 6000. The main campus of the University is located close to the city centre and is one of the “greenest” campuses in Romania. USAMV Cluj-Napoca also includes teaching and research farms and stations, located in close proximity to the city as well as a recently acquired vineyard.

USAMV Cluj-Napoca is one of six public universities in Cluj-Napoca, a vibrant and multicultural city, located in the heart of the legendary and beautiful Transylvania. Cluj-Napoca is the second most populous city of Romania, with an emerging economic and cultural development. Cluj-Napoca’s international airport is very well connected to major European cities through tens of daily flights. The city is located along the course of Someșul Mic river, very close to the Apuseni Mountains, which are part of the more famous Carpathians. The city is surrounded by forests and grasslands. Cluj-Napoca has a warm-summer continental climate. Major attractions in the city include churches, the old town, parks and botanical gardens.
