Internationalisation has become an increasingly important feature of doctoral education, opening up opportunities for collaboration, mobility and knowledge exchange. At the same time, universities are operating in a geopolitical landscape that brings new considerations to international collaboration.
For academic leaders, this raises questions about how to approach international cooperation in a responsible way. In addition, these developments have implications across many aspects of doctoral education – from attracting and integrating international doctoral candidates and establishing frameworks for international collaboration and research, to ensuring that doctoral candidates are adequately supported through tailored guidance and training.
The 2027 EUA-CDE Thematic Workshop will explore these questions, offering the European doctoral education community the opportunity to discuss how geopolitical change is affecting the doctoral level and how universities can navigate this challenging environment.
Through keynote speeches, panel discussions and interactive breakout sessions, the event will offer the opportunity to exchange perspectives on universities’ strategic objectives for responsible international collaboration at doctoral level, the onboarding and integration of international doctoral candidates and ethical considerations in cross-border doctoral cooperation. Hosted by the University for Continuing Education Krems, the workshop will also explore the opportunities and challenges of doctoral education cooperation within European Universities alliances, international research security and intercultural supervision.
Over two days, participants will be invited to showcase their university’s practices and share their experiences, dive deep into emerging developments in the field and reflect on how universities can tackle challenges to responsible internationalisation in doctoral education.
Who should attend the 2027 Thematic Workshop?
Participation in this event is reserved to representatives of EUA-CDE member universities only.
It may be of interest for academic leaders, doctoral education managers and professionals, as well as doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers.

Dear colleagues,
It is my great pleasure to welcome you to Krems for the 2027 EUA-CDE Thematic Workshop on ‘Responsible internationalisation in doctoral education’. We are delighted to host this important gathering of the European doctoral education community.
Located in the UNESCO World Heritage region Wachau, Campus Krems provides an inspiring environment for international exchange and academic collaboration. The University for Continuing Education Krems combines research, innovation and lifelong learning with a strong international outlook. With approximately 6,500 students from more than 100 countries, international collaboration is an integral part of our mission.
The theme of this workshop is highly relevant to universities across Europe. International collaboration remains essential for excellent research and doctoral education, while institutions are simultaneously navigating new challenges relating to geopolitics, research security, ethics and inclusion. Responsible internationalisation therefore requires a careful balance between openness, academic freedom and institutional responsibility. It offers valuable opportunities to strengthen research quality, foster inno-vation and create supportive environments in which doctoral candidates can thrive. As universities, we have a shared responsibility to ensure that international engagement continues to advance knowledge, mutual understanding and societal progress.
I am confident that this workshop will inspire valuable discussions, strengthen professional networks and encourage the exchange of good practices from across Europe. By bringing together diverse per-spectives and experiences, it will contribute to shaping the future of doctoral education in an increasingly interconnected world.
On behalf of the University for Continuing Education Krems, I wish you a productive workshop, stimulating conversations and an enjoyable stay in Krems.
