The connection between internal and external reviews

EUA workshop series: Making internal QA work for institutional growth (III)
06 Jun 2025 Online

This workshop will examine the different ways in which internal and external quality can be interconnected—or, at times, create challenges for one another.

It will provide insights into various institutional approaches, from those that have fully aligned their IQA systems to meet EQA requirements, to those that have deliberately separated the two through distinct structures and processes, and those that prioritize IQA while adopting a broader perspective on maintaining institutional sustainability within their relevant external environments.

Speaker:

  • Oliver Vettori, Dean of Accreditations & Quality Management, Director of Academic Affairs, Vienna University of Economics and Business, Austria, and ENGAGE.EU University Alliance
  • Frank Niedermeier, Head of Higher Education Studies Department, Center for Quality Development, University of Potsdam

Registration for this event is now closed. We received an unexpectedly high number of registrations, and we are unable to accommodate further requests for participation. In light of the success of the series, we are exploring the possibility of offering it again later this year. We encourage you to stay informed about future opportunities by visiting the EUA website regularly.

About the workshop series:

Internal reviews are often seen as a bureaucratic task, especially when the data collected isn’t analysed properly or used to drive meaningful action. This can negatively affect stakeholder engagement in the review process and hinder the development of a quality-focused culture.

This series of workshops aims to help institutions close the feedback loop by:

  • offering guidance on several key areas of the process, including engaging a diverse range of stakeholders in the data analysis process;
  • increasing the visibility of the analysis and implementation stages to raise awareness within the institution;
  • encouraging self-reflection and constructive criticism within the institutional community,
  • planning and executing follow-up actions;
  • overcoming challenges such as limited financial and human resources;
  • connecting internal and external review processes; and
  • fostering a culture of institutional quality.
