Universities are places where ideas grow, where critical thinking is nurtured and where dialogue sparks. As such they contribute to open, democratic and pluralistic societies.
Academic freedom and institutional autonomy, the foundations of modern European universities, are closely interwoven with liberal democracy. Yet, as democracies are under pressure, polarised narratives divide societies and trust in higher education is at risk, the daily life of university communities is increasingly affected. In this challenging context, universities need to reflect on their role and ability to exist as spaces of inquiry and trust.
This webinar offers a moment to listen, explore and question these challenges through a constructive and forward-looking discussion on how universities position themselves in times of polarisation, as EUA kicks off a series of activities on this topic.
Participants can expect an engaging and inclusive space for exchange with contributions from student leaders, institutional leadership and academic experts offering diverse perspectives on universities’ democratic roles. Attendees will be invited to share questions and reactions throughout the discussion.
Whether you join as a university representative, a member of staff, a researcher, a student or a policy maker, your perspectives will help shape a collective understanding of how universities can continue to operate in a polarised environment.
