The European Commission and the 2025 Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU are organising a Global Multistakeholder High Level Conference on the governance of Web 4.0 and Virtual Worlds, on 31 March and 1 April 2025.
Background
Web 4.0 and Virtual Worlds are the next technological frontiers, which will affect fundamentally the internet as we know and pose unique opportunities and challenges for governance. As these digital realms become increasingly sophisticated, mirroring and intertwining with the physical world, the need for comprehensive governance frameworks becomes paramount.
In this context, the European Commission and the 2025 Polish Presidency of the Council are convening a Global Multistakeholder High Level Conference with the objective of defining foundational principles for a global governance framework for Web 4.0 and Virtual Worlds.
Key information on the event
This event, which will take place in Brussels and online on the 31st of March and 1st of April 2025, will be the first of its kind, bringing together high-level policymakers, technologists, academics, and community leaders from all over the world for a truly multistakeholder discussion. Discussions during the conference will be guided by background papers collecting preliminary input from the community and which will be shared in advance to the event.
Expected outcomes
The conference aims at the adoption of policy and technical recommendations for the future governance of Web 4.0 and Virtual Worlds, based on consensus at the event. These intend to serve as inspiration for forthcoming discussions such as the 20 years review of the World Summit for Information Society (WSIS+20).
