The Magna Charta Universitatum is a declaration of the core values that define universities worldwide—academic freedom, institutional autonomy, research, internationalisation, equality and serving society. These principles are highly relevant to addressing contemporary global challenges.

By signing the MCU 2020, universities will:

  • Demonstrate their dedication to the fundamental values that underpin academic excellence and societal progress.
  • Join an esteemed network of institutions that collaborate to enhance higher education worldwide.
  • Gain access to initiatives such as the Living Values Project, research collaborations, conferences, webinars, and student competitions designed to support and promote these shared principles.

The next opportunity to sign the MCU 2020 will be at the upcoming Magna Charta Anniversary event in London, UK, on 13 November 2025.

The signing process for universities is to download the application form, fill it out and submit it along with the required documents. The application will be reviewed by the Governing Council during its Summer meeting before the 2025 signing event. Applications should be submitted as soon as possible and ideally before the end of April. If universities cannot submit the documents by then, but would still like to join, please contact magnacharta@unibo.it to arrange for their application to be considered. If accepted, the Rector/Vice-Chancellor/President will be invited to the Ceremony of the Signature, which will take place in London on 13 November 2025, during the celebration of the Magna Charta Universitatum Anniversary.
