EUA is pleased to share the release of Free to Think 2024, Scholars at Risk’s annual report analysing attacks on academic freedom around the world.

This year's report covers 391 attacks against higher education across 51 countries and territories. The report emphasizes how attacks against higher education are widespread and can happen anywhere, in authoritarian and democratic societies, requiring the immediate attention and cooperation of the international community.

The Free to Think 2024 report also includes concrete actions the international community can take to promote academic freedom, including by endorsing, developing, and implementing protections for academic freedom based on the Principles for Implementing the Right to Academic Freedom. The report also encourages universities to join Scholars at Risk in their work supporting at-risk scholars around the world whose lives, livelihoods, and access to higher education are being threatened.
