Participation in the European Higher Education Sector Observatory offers universities numerous benefits, ranging from increased visibility and recognition to enhanced quality assurance, internationalisation, and collaboration opportunities.

The EHESO will leverage the strengths of existing EU data tools and capacities, including the European Tertiary Education Register (ETER), U-Multirank, Eurydice and other relevant data sources to compare, analyse and showcase the higher education sector’s performance.

The Observatory will provide four major tools:

  1. A European Higher Education Scoreboard monitoring the policy agenda of the European Union by showcasing relevant indicators on countries and higher education systems.
  2. An institutional Benchmarking Tool allowing institutions to compare and benchmark against a large sample of EU and OECD universities.
  3. A Student Observatory as a major European tool to inform students about study options in Europe and at European higher education institutions.
  4. An open access Data Centre offering open access to micro data.

EHESO data will be based on data from national statistical offices (based on ETER), data from institutional and student surveys (based on U-Multirank), plus information and data from other databases and projects, such as for example Eurostudent, Eurograduate, ERASMUS+ data and data on quality assurance.

Funded by Erasmus+, the European programme for education, training, youth and sport, EHESO is an initiative by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Education, Youth, Sport, and Culture and operated by a consortium under a service contract with the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA).
