The European University Association is now inviting applications for a 2026 Thematic Peer Group on ‘Universities and democracy in times of polarisation’.
Critical thinking, problem solving, respect for knowledge, openness and curiosity are the basis for university learning, teaching, research and innovation. However, with increasing societal and political polarisation, university leaders across Europe are faced with challenging situations and decisions. So, how can they hold space for open exchange of different arguments and perspectives, while ensuring the safety of students and staff and saying no to all forms of extremism that do not respect the freedom and dignity of others and evidence-based debate?
Furthermore, pressure on and threats to academic freedom and university autonomy in several systems make it more difficult for universities and their leaders to act in this context.
This is why, EUA is launching a new project on ‘Universities and democracy in times of polarisation’.
As part of this project, the Thematic Peer Group will gather university leaders from across Europe to exchange their perspectives and experiences in dealing with these challenges in their daily practice.
Project goals:
The call for participation in the TPG is open to all EUA member universities. Applicants should be current or former university leaders with institution-wide decision-making power, have recent experience in the field and be motivated to articulate thought leadership on the topic.
The selection of group members will be done primarily on the basis of the motivation and the experience of the candidates, as demonstrated in the application. In addition, the following aspects will be considered:
The deadline to apply is 30 January 2026. Selected candidates will be active in group activities from February to December 2026.
