“Yebo! Development of the Internationalization of PhD Studies in South-Africa” (2017-20) is an Erasmus+ funded project focused on further developing the internationalisation of doctoral education in South African universities.

Three approaches contribute to achieving this objective:

  • Developing a web‐based portal that encompasses research and funding networks, identification of funding opportunities, with an emphasis on training materials and videos accessible to all
  • Four themed conferences focusing on best practices for the internationalisation and promotion of doctoral education, and fostering networking and cooperation opportunities
  • Three training sessions, organised in South Africa, with a focus on supervision capacities

EUA is a project partner and will advise the consortium on the application of its “Framework for the Internationalisation of Doctoral Education” (FRINDOC). This framework helped inspire Yebo! and will serve as the basis for its activities. It consists of four principles for the internationalisation of doctoral education:

  • Research capacity and capability: universities must provide access to good research environments with appropriate supervision and resources
  • International profile: universities must be engaged in international activities at the institutional level, through the work of both supervisors and doctoral candidates
  • Institutional structures: universities must have sufficient institutional structures to manage, administer and develop the internationalisation of doctoral education
  • Mobility: universities must facilitate mobility for both doctoral candidates and staff
