Recognition processes are an integral component of mobility programmes.

Efforts to ensure automatic recognition of study periods have intensified since the 2018 EU Council Recommendation on automatic mutual recognition of qualifications and learning periods abroad. For example, Learning Agreements under the EU’s Erasmus+ programme now include an ‘automatic recognition’ checkbox, signalling its importance. However, uneven implementation of the Recommendation persists among member states according to a recent evaluation of its implementation.

The AUREA (Automatic Recognition Assessment) project, co-funded by Erasmus+, aims to support automatic recognition of study periods abroad by identifying barriers, analysing existing options, and providing policy recommendations for the future of automatic recognition.

The project runs from 2025 until 2027.

The project seeks to address challenges and promote unobstructed mobility within the Erasmus+ community, thereby advancing the goal of automatic recognition, by

  • assessing the state of play in recognition for mobile students undergoing credit mobility,
  • creating a shared understanding of (full) automatic credit recognition on a European level,
  • providing higher education institutions with the necessary tools and information to assess their readiness for implementation of automatic credit recognition, and
  • supporting evidence-based policy making.

Target groups of the AUREA project are: national and international higher education stakeholders; policy-makers responsible for education matters; university staff members; students.

AUREA project outputs and activities include the following:

  • focus groups with students and representatives of higher education institutions, as well as national and European stakeholders and policy makers;
  • surveys and interviews to collect data on automatic credit recognition practices;
  • report and online multiplier event on the current state of automatic credit recognition;
  • Higher Education Social Labs;
  • self-evaluation framework for higher education institutions on the implementation of automatic recognition of study periods abroad;
  • online capacity-building workshops.

As a first step, the AUREA project launched a call for participants for three online focus groups in May 2025 for university staff who are directly involved in mobility and credit recognition processes. These focus groups aim to gather insights from participants’ experience with credit recognition, and in particular automatic credit recognition, including challenges and areas to improve.

These online events, jointly hosted by EUA and the European University Foundation (EUF), are open to participants from institutions in both Erasmus+ programme countries and non-programme countries, as well as those that do and do not participate in European Universities alliances.

The dates for the three focus groups are as follows:

  • 7 May, 13.30-15.00 CEST
  • 20 May, 15.30-17.00 CEST
  • 21 May, 10.00-11.30 CEST

The AUREA project is coordinated by the European Students’ Union. The consortium also includes the following partners:

  • European University Association (EUA)
  • Erasmus Student Network
  • European University Foundation
  • Eötvös Loránd University, Hungary
  • Ghent University, Belgium
  • Philipps-Universität Marburg, Germany
  • University "Kadri Zeka", Kosovo
