EUA-EPUE moderates session at SET-Plan workshop

06 July 2018

During the stakeholder collaboration workshop on SET-Plan Key Action 6: Energy Efficiency in Industry”, held in Brussels on 27-28 June 2018, EUA-EPUE hosted a session on Knowledge exchange, training and capacity building.

The workshop sought to enhance cooperation between national programmes and to further develop the activities in SET-Plan Key Action 6  into concrete projects. Moderated by Borana Taraj, EUA Policy & Project Officer for Research & Innovation, the session welcomed four speakers from industry and academia.

Marco Carlo Masoero, Politecnico di Torino, presented a Master programme on "Innovation for Energy Efficiency and Sustainability in Industry and Services". Gérard Griffay, Arcellor Mittal, and Benjamin Remy, University of Lorraine, introduced a project on "Optimization of industrial energy ecosystems", and Amy Peace, Britest Ltd, shared information about a "Simplified Sustainability Screening and Evaluation Toolkit to support Decision Making in the Process Industries".

In the following discussions, participants agreed that industry and academia should engage in developing standard tools and methodologies for evaluating sustainability, as well as training new methodologies already at the university level and through lifelong learning within industry. It was also emphasised that energy efficiency gains often emerge from stronger collaboration between stakeholders beyond the level of individual plants of manufacturing sites.

The involvement in the workshop is a result of EUA-EPUE's continued engagement in the SET-Plan Temporary Working Group (TWG) 6 on Energy Efficiency in Industry. Besides this topic, EUA-EPUE has contributed to six other TWGs and Implementation Plans in the fields of Smart Cities and Communities, Smart Solutions for Energy Consumers, Energy Efficiency in Buildings, Heating and Cooling for Buildings, Batteries and e-mobility, and Bioenergy and Renewable Fuels.
