The High-Level Conference “European Universities in the Energy Transition: Towards a Clean Energy Future” was the sixth of a series of “Energy Clustering Events" which took place in 2016 and 2017 to discuss and stimulate the development of innovative research and education programmes in the energy field.
Europe’s universities are key partners in research, innovation and education. Following the drive for more clean energy research and innovation through the Energy Union, the 10th anniversary of the European Commission`s Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET-Plan) and Mission Innovation, 2017 is an opportunity to take stock of the contributions of universities to the different European priorities in the field of energy.
With this conference aimed at high-level policymakers and university leadership, the European University Association (EUA) through its European Platform for Universities in Energy Research & Education (EUA-EPUE) and the UNI-SET project seek to strengthen the dialogue on the current and future role of universities in the triangle of Europe’s energy, research and higher education policy.
The conference highlighted the contributions of universities towards the goals of the Energy Union and the SET-Plan through the UNI-SET project and discuss how the input could be enhanced in the following years, following the publication of the 2016 Roadmap for European Universities in Energy and European Atlas of Universities in Energy Research and Education. It will be an opportunity for exchange between European policymakers and higher education leadership on the topic of one of Europe’s most pressing Societal Challenges.
The conference included the presentation of an “Energy Transition and the Future of Energy Research, Innovation and Education: An Action Agenda for European Universities”, a strategic document providing recommendations for universities and policymakers for the update of energy education and research programmes.
