Researchers at Risk: Mapping Europe’s Response
Granting refuge and academic freedom to scholars and students, who had to flee persecution and wars in their home countries and regions, is an eminent function of universities. Over the past decades, the numbers of academics suffering from persecution world-wide has grown and applications for assistance to support organisations clearly exceed the number of placement positions and funding available.
This report presents the findings of a mapping conducted in the framework of the “Initiative to Support, Promote and Integrate Researchers at Risk in Europe” (Inspireurope). Its aim is to identify the support available to researchers at risk in Europe, as well as gaps and opportunities for future support. The report provides insight into the experiences of researchers at risk, their hosts and support organisations. It also discusses national- and European-level support measures.
The findings are meant to foster a discussion on how to improve the situation for researchers at risk, and to generally encourage more exchange of information among all actors across Europe.
Funded under the European Commission’s Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, Inspireurope is hosted at Maynooth University in Ireland and coordinated by Scholars at Risk Europe.
